George III Old Sheffield Plate Wine Funnel and Strainer
English, Early 19th Century
Measures: 17 cm high; 8 cm in diameter

A solid Old Sheffield Plate wine funnel, dating to around 1815. Designed for decanting and filtering sediment from good wine, the spout curved to direct the flow against the side of the decanter to prevent excess aeration or "bruising". The integral strainer fitting within the funnel can be detached for washing or for use as a seperate lemon strainer for punch etc. Both the funnel and the strainer have a decorative gadrooned rim.

Old Sheffield Plate was a Georgian innovation which allowed decorative items to be produced less expensively and more practicably. As a soft metal, certain functional silver items were prone to being easily damaged or dented. Fusing a layer of silver with stronger copper made certain items much more functional.

This funnel is in very acceptable condition. There is plate loss to the seams and the spout, minor denting to the tip. A very decorative and practical funnel.
