An interesting and exceptionally scarce historical image of a stage waggon after the Swiss-born, English-based painter Jacques-Laurent Agasse (1767-1849).
Eight large carthorses pull a heavily laden stage wagon along a path in an open landscape. The wagon is covered in a blanket/tarpaulin with baskets on the roof, a woman and child sit within. Beside the waggon is a drover on horseback, who rides with a whip. To the left is a signpost beside which is a man walking two dogs, one of which is cocking its leg on the signpost.
Exceptionally scarce but see British Museum 1939,1014.19 for an impression with the publication details and title beneath.
