The "Hawthorne" strainer is named after the Hawthorne Café in Boston, where is was popularized in the late 19th century. Originally patented in 1892 as an improvement on the "julep strainer" (a perforated spoon), it was designed to fit snugly within a glass with the wire coiled assisting with the catching of ice, fruit pips and pulp. Early models are pierced with the word "Hawthorne" in homage to their origin.

The "Bonzer" EPNS brand was established by the English barware manufacturer Mitchell & Cooper in 1927.
