A Rare Plein Air Painter's Small Size Pochade “Thumb Box”
Varnished hardwood
Unmarked but possibly French
Late 19th to Early 20th Century

Measures: 18.3 cm wide x 10 cm deep x 4 cm high

The varnished hardwood (walnut) box with dovetailed corners, a leather thumb strap to base, brass fastener, catch and hinges. Contains the original small wooden oil palette (encrusted with paint). The lid fitted with grooved tracks to take two small painting boards, which each could measure 15.5 cm x 8.5 cm

The box designed to hold a small number of paint tubes and other essential items for painting. Small enough to be kept comfortably in a coat pocket. The two panels which can also be held within can be kept separate so as not to smudge during transit. Designed for producing true "pochades" (small, spontaneous, pocket-sized paintings).
