An Extremely Rare United States of America 1876 "Centennial" Commemorative Badge & Ribbon
Cast Bronzed Metal Brooch with Woven Silk Ribbon
Possibly Philadelphia
19th Century

Measures:-
7.5 cm high x 4 cm wide

Provenance:-
The American Wife of George Beaumont Beeman (1862-1954) (President of 'The Huguenot Society' 1917-1920)

A scarce original historical item made to mark the Centenary of American Declaration Independence in 1876. The badge is formed of a well cast, lozenge-shaped pin brooch with the word "CENTENNIAL' in raised letters, suspended from which is a woven silk ribbon with the original thirteen-star American flag.

Possibly made for the opening of the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in May 1876, the ceremony for which was attended by the U.S. President of the time, Ulysses S. Grant.

Before August 1876 the United States had 37 states. On 1 August of that year Colorado was officially admitted to the Union, becoming the 38th state and earning the nickname of the "Centennial State" because it achieved statehood in the anniversary year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
