Sound condition, minor foxing and discolouration as expected. Some creasing, tearing, thining and a few holes where the paper has historically been folded.

Contains the description of the funeral service for Horatio, Viscount Nelson in St Paul's cathedral, a distinctive woodcut illustration of the funeral car and a representation of the designs on the lid and sides of Lord Nelson's coffin.

Yesterday the burial of this illustrious warrior took place in St Paul's Cathedral.

His body is buried in Peace... But his name liveth evermore

A first state issue of The Times. No. 6629. for Friday, January 10, 1806 containing the famous illustrations within: later reprints done throughout the 19th and 20th Century ('facsimile' editions and pastiche reissues for anniversaries including the Trafalgar Centenary etc) move these illustrations to the front cover to make a more striking presentation, in keeping with later illustrated newspapers up to the present day. However, here, in this first state, the cover bears advertisements (including one for "Danish West-India Estates" (a slave plantation)). The  illustrations, which are the first illustrations ever to have appeared in 'The Times' and some of the earliest illustrations in any newspaper, are within.

An exceptionally rare item.
