An original, complete issue of 'The Radio Times - Christmas Number', published 19 December 1930 with cover-art by Paul Nash (1889-1946).

At the time of this image's publication the Art Editor of Radio Times was Maurice Gorham (1902–1975) (later the publication's Editor) who was educated at Stonyhurst College, Lancashire and then studied history at Balliol College, Oxford. Gorham's years at the Radio Times were noted for his bold choices of artists and articles.

The remarkable front-cover here perhaps represents the high-point of ‘high art’ cover design for this once essential seasonal periodical. The artist has been entirely true to himself: there is nothing obviously ‘Christmassy’ included. The dials, tilted Crittall window and distant transmitter all forming a modern abstract design, there isn't a reindeer, angel, holly sprig or Santa hat in sight. (Maybe just a hint of snow on the hills beneath the transmitter.)

Extremely rare.
