The French ‘rafraîchissoir’ or ‘verrière’ serves the same purpose as the British 'Monteith'. The scalloped rim is designed to receive the stems of wine glasses so that they could be chilled, upside down, in ice which would contained within the tin liner. The example here has inlets for 12 glasses and is in an attractive shade of crimson red with the design picked out in gold: it is decorated to one side with a solid gold band and to the other with an asymmetric pattern of strawberries. These items are now generally used for decorative purposes rather than for cooling glassware.
It is particularly nice to find an example retaining an original, uncorroded tin liner.
