A Grand Tour Greek Figure Olpe Depicting Heracles Taming the Cretan Bull
Terracotta With Hand-Painted Slip Decoration
Early 20th Century
(Copying Late Corinthian (550 BC) Style)

Measures:-
26 cm high

A well potted and hand-decorated piece in the 'Classical' taste and taking the form of an Ancient Greek 'olpe' (wine jug). Painted with coloured slips and with sgraffito highlights, depicting Heracles Taming the Cretan Bull (the Seventh "Labour of Hercules"). There is also a bird included within the design, possibly a Stymphalian bird which Heracles had defeated as in his Sixth Labour.

Probably an early 20th Century "Grand Tour" item, reproducing ceramics made during the Late Corinthian era (c.550 BC).
