A Japanese Bark Picture
Natural Bark, Moss & Lichen Collage & Paint
Japan, Circa 1950
32 cm high x 41 cm wide
These distinctive landscape pictures were popular in the 1950s and are most frequently encountered in the USA, where they were brought home as souvenirs by military personel who had served with the United States Indo-Pacific Command in American bases in Japan in the aftermath of WW2. The use of bark taken from the Japanese or Asian white birch (Betula platyphylla) is particularly evident in these kitsch collage scenes.
