A bowl in a pattern designed by Johnson Bros to be exhibited at the Paris 1925 'Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes' (the show which ran from April to November 1925 and gave rise to a new 'International Style' which became known as 'Art Deco').
Made in Johnson Bros's trademark "Pareek" creamware pottery body, transfer printed with a 'modernist' Art Deco stylized fountain pattern. Art historian Dr Jeanne Morgan Zarucchi has noted that the Johnson Bros "Les Fontaines" pattern may relate to a similar textile wall covering entitled "Les Jets D'Eau" designed by Édouard Bénédictus (1878-1930) for the 1925 Paris Exposition for a reception room in an imagined French Embassy. It is also very similar to the central design of the celebrated 'Oasis Screen' exhibited at the Exposition by Edgar Brandt (1880-1960).
Note:-
For a plate by Johnson Bros in the same "Les Fontaines" pattern, see Art Institute of Chicago, 2017.129 [Annette M. Chapin Fund].
Good condition. General fine craquelure, commensurate with age. Small chip at 3 o'clock within the pattern, very minor chip at 6 o'clock within the pattern.
