Notes:-
The French aristocrat Henri de Vaufreland (1874-1957) was an amateur equestrian artist, author and enthusiastic Anglophile huntsman, who became the secretary of the famous 'Pau Hunt' (first established along British fox-hunting principles in 1842). Its 'country', between Gardères and the hills surrounding Pau (in southwestern France near the Pyrenees) was nicknamed “Leicestershire in France”. The 'Henri de Vaufreland Hurdle' is still run annually in his honour at the Hippodrome de Pau (Pau Racecourse).
This rare, self-published album from the late Belle Époque is a beautiful record of an April 1906 equestrian cross-country match between Miss Hutton's and Frederic H. Prince's stables, followed by a race between members of the Pau Hunt and the Biarritz Bayonne Hunt. The style of these events largely following that of an English point-to-point race.
Condition:-
Good to fair condition. (Spotting and discolouration, patchy scuffing to front, binding weak with cracking to inner hinge, a couple of loose leaves, but fairly sound, very rare and, most importantly, complete).
