An attractive print, dating to the height of the "Mezzotint Mania" era, when the medium became so highly collectible that supply outstripped demand and new mezzotints of old subjects were commissioned.

Thomas Gooch Appleton was a printmaker who became especially well-known for his mezzotint engravings after original 18th Century portraits. He exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1877-1905.

"The Printseller" Vol.1 No.1 of January, 1903 (p.49) advertised that only 50 impressions of this image were printed in colours. They were priced at 12 Guineas each (around £1,500 in today's money).
