Lettered beneath the image “Beeswing the property of Mr Orde, Winner of the Gold Cup, value 300 Guineas at Ascot the 9th June 1842.” In county house condition, ready to hang. Characterfully toned and retaining its original early Victorian rosewood frame with gilt inner slip.

A scarce popular print of Beeswing, one of the most celebrated racehorses of her generation and said to be one of the greatest brood mares of all time. Bred at Nunnykirk Hall in Northumberland by William Orde Jr. (1774–1843), Beeswing was descended from Eclipse on both her dam and her sire’s side.

In her racing career, she won an astonishing 51 of her 63 starts, the 1842 Ascot Gold Cup being her most notable victory. She had eight fouls - four of which became very successful runners and included two classic winners amongst their number. Many of today’s racehorses can trace their pedigree back to Beeswing.
