A charming and accomplished impressionistic depiction of a fly fisherman casting with his rod into the shallow, fast flowing river beneath a birch tree. Probably a scene in the west of Scotland.
Eve Baker (née Hirst) studied painting at the Royal College of Art under Sir William Rothenstein. She married the painter, ceramicist and sculptor Robert Baker (1909-1992), who became Professor of Ceramics at the Royal Collage of Art, Director of the Stoke-on-Trent College of Art and later Chief Designer and Art Director at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company.
The Bakers both continued to practise their art individually but, together, became particularly eminent as conservators of ancient ecclesiastical wall paintings and limestone sculptures. They founded the Eve Baker Trust which still exits to promote "The preservation and conservation of historic wall paintings, sculpture and other works of creative expression, as well as the advancement of education and research in these fields".
The canvas board bears a label for George Rowney's "Birchmore Board" (which was in production until around 1936) with the additonal retailer's name and address of "J W Love & Co, 36 Gordon Street, Glasgow" (an art supplier who seem to have disappered by the mid-20th Century). The subject matter, along with the label, suggest the canvas was bought and the painting completed whilst Eve Baker was on a painting trip to Scotland.
