"Sir Walter Ralegh (Raleigh)" (1554-1618)
after Simon de Passe (1595-1647)
Line-engraving on laid paper
London circa 1617
16.2 cm x 10.6 cm (paper size)
Lettered beneath the image with the text "The true and lively Portraiture / of the Honourable and learned . Knight Sr Walter Ralegh." and in the oval around the portrait "VERA EFFIGIES CLARISSMI VIRI DOMNI GUALTHERI RALEGH EQV AUR. etc"
Similar to the plate used in 1617 as the frontispiece to the 3rd Edition of Raleigh's "History of the World" but, seemingly, separately published.
See NPG D27998 for similar. The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich also holds an impression, but without the lower text panel [PAD4648].
