"The Cinderella Nursery Story Book"
("Illustrated with numerous Engravings" (by Edward Dalziel (1817–1905))
Ward, Lock & Co, London
Undated but published 1878
Octavo, 8vo
18.8 cm high x 14 cm wide
Stiff pictorial board covers
95 pp (numbered 129 to 224), plus 5 pp ads etc

Contents: "Cinderella, or the Little Glass Slipper"; "Dick Whittington and his Cat"; "The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood" and "Puss in Boots". Various engravings by Edward Dalziel (1817–1905).

Pictorial cover printed in black, red, green and gold, scuffed, stained and grubby. Bound with red cotton spine. Hinges split internally. Text block sound and time loosened but holding together. Corners bumped and fritting to the edges. Two engravings and a couple of decorative borders coloured with crayon. A reasonable copy of a fragile and very scarce book.

Other Ward, Lock & Co children's books dating from the same period indicate this volume was published in 1878 and was No.8 in the "Mercie Sunshine Series of Cheap illustrated Books for Children" (probably explaining the idiosyncratic page numbering). Worldcat identifies only four other copies of this books in institutional collections.

A rare Victorian telling on the Cinderella story, along with other tales which are all now frequently adapted for pantomime. As above Worldcat (the world's largest bibliographic database) locates only four other copies of this book in institutional collections. One each at: The British Library, The National Art Library (London); Cambridge University Library and The Library of Trinity College Dublin. A further copy is located in the Bodleian Library, Oxford which has an additoinal coloured lithograph frontispiece, a variation in its page numberings (which are consecutive starting from "1") and has a different vignette illustration on its title page.
