"This book is intended as a guide to the ski-runner, whether a beginner or moderately experienced, who wishes to learn how to cross the snow as safely as possible, with as little effort as possible, and as fast as possible"..."

The author of this work, Edwin Vivian Stuart Caulfeild (1874–1958), was a pioneer English ski instructor and one of the greatest authorities on early skiing technique.  The Caulfeild glacier in the Antarctic was named in his honour.
