This work by Alfred William Rich was illustrated in "The Studio" magazine in 1908, along with the accompanying text:
'Mr. Rich's art is a companiable art: it is reminiscent of companionship with nature by the way of tradition. It has a literary quality which speaks of the wayside of an older England, and there is a flavour of romance too in these small panels. They are intensely sympathetic, informed with beauty within limitations, which one feels the artist would not escape if he could, lest superficialities of a modern treatment should blight the rare mood expressed."
The other work illustrated in the same piece, depicting the terrace at Chiswick House, is now in the British Museum [see BM 1908.0408.1].
This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the works of Alfred William Rich currently in production.
