A landscape by the British artist William James Müller (1812-1845) who was a leading member of the Bristol School. The work almost certainly depicts a scene in North Wales, possibly a view on the River Lledr. Müller made several painting trips to Wales during his brief life and bridges crossing over streams of rapidly moving water are recurring motifs within the artist's oeuvre. A related composition entitled "The Approaching Storm", with a similarly attired red figure beside a bridge over a stream, is located in The New Art Gallery, Walsall.

Müller's premature death at the age of 33 robbed the world of a very promising, cosmopolitan talent who was just beginning to gain significant recognition (especially with regards to his Orientalist views following journeys to the Middle East).

His work is represented in a number of important collections including Tate; V&A; Leeds Art Gallery; Ashmolean Museum; Fitzwilliam Museum; Bristol Museum & Art Gallery; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Yale Center for British Art etc.
