Jean-Jacques Le Veau (or Leveau) was born in impoverished circumstances in Rouen. A sickly child who was unwanted by his parents, he was left to be raised by nuns who noted his talent for drawing. He became a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Descamps (1714-1791) and went on to become an accomplished and highly respected engraver, interpreting the work of a number of celebrated painters.
