Portrait, full-length, wearing the uniform of a Marshall of France, holding glove in right hand, cocked hat in the crook of his left arm, with a sash diagonally from right shoulder, looking to right, in front of curtain, a view of the Tuileries behind. Cropped to the image for framing. Presented in an attractively distressed English water-gilded frame of the period, with original ripple-glass.

A very attractive mezzotint portrait of King Charles X of France (1757-1836). Charles X was the penultimate King of France. He left France and remained in exile during the French Revolution, living in South Audley Street, Mayfair, London. He returned ahead of his elder brother Louis XVIII at the Bourbon Restoration in 1814 to make arrangements for the return of the monarchy. Following his brother's death he succeeded to the throne as King of France in 1824 (his brother had no heir). He ruled from 16 September 1824 till 2 August 1830 but was forced to abdicate after the 1830 Revolution and was succeeded by his cousin, Louis Philippe, Duke of Orléans. Charles went into exile again, first in the U.K. were he resided at Lulworth Castle in Dorset and then Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh before moving to Prague. He died at Gorizia (now in Slovenia) in 1836 and is buried there. He is the only King of France to be buried outside the country.

The original portrait by Thomas Lawrence (Royal Collection RCIN 405138) was painted between August and November 1825 and delivered to King George IV of England in 1829 (the year that this print here was published). It now hangs in the 'Waterloo Chamber' at Windsor Castle.
