The British couturier Sir Norman Hartnell designed and retailed a range of now much sought after costume jewellery to accompany his clothes. Having begun desiging costumes for theatre productions as an undergraduate at Cambridge in the 1920's, Hartnell embarked on a stellar career as a fashion designer. Friends with the group of well-connected socialites who became known as the "Bright Young Things", he designed clothes for stylish and well-connected débutantes and by the 1930s was dressing royalty. In 1947 he designed Princess Elizabeth's wedding dress for her marriage to Prince Philip and in 1953 received the commission to design her Coronation Gown. These cufflinks date to the late 1950s/early 1960’s, by which time his fashion house had introduced a range of formal but highly fashionable menswear.
