Private Collection, London
This striking image of a member of the 'Royal Horse Guards' on Horse Guards Parade, wearing the famous 'Albert helmet' (with a scarlet horsehair plume), uniform cape, gauntlets, shoulder belt, and cavalry cuirass breastplate is taken from a Popular Edition of Nicholson's "London Types" (a series of thirteen plates published by William Heinemann, London, November 1898).
For his graphic works Nicholson was inspired by the simple woodblock prints in Georgian 'chapbooks' which, though crude, could nevertheless convey complicated images through clever design.
